The 10 Biggest Threats To America In 2015
There are many dire threats coming from all directions that can potentially devastate America. Although the United States of America is the sole remaining Superpower that prized status can change overnight. There is no other country with as much influence, responsibility and power as America but many wonder if God’s favor is gradually being withdrawn from America because of her presumptuous sins and open rebellion against God.
Every year, the US Intelligence Community releases a report outlining the biggest risks to the United States National Security. The following list of Global Threats reveals why the US intelligence community is intentional about maintaining a stance of vigilance to avert these grave ever present dangers.
Thomas Jefferson, one of America’s great founding fathers warned: “I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.” How applicable this is today!
Abraham Lincoln’s insightful warning comes ringing down the decades to Americans today: “Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest, with a Bonaparte for a commander, could not by force take a drink from the Ohio or make a track on the Blue Ridge in a trial of a thousand years. At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer. If it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen we must live through all time or die by suicide.”
Here are the ten biggest threats to America, as outlined by that report.
“Infectious diseases are among the foremost health security threats. A more crowded and interconnected world is increasing the opportunities for human and animal diseases to emerge and spread globally.” – p. 14
Jesus Himself warned that in the last days there would be widespread devastating “pestilences” or incurable diseases. This is an ominous sign that Jesus is coming soon. (See Luke 21:11) The recent breakout of the deadly Ebola virus claimed the lives of thousands of people in Africa.
“Antimicrobial drug resistance,” is a fearful phenomenon in which many bacteria that was once thought to be under control is developing formidable resistance to the drugs that used to fight them. This is expected to only get worse in the future. Dreadful diseases and menacing pathogens continue to kill millions of people around the world every year. This report makes it painfully clear that it would require only one disease of exceptional virulence to precipitate a cataclysmic global health disaster.
9. Human Security – Extreme Weather Endangering Food & Water Supplies
“Extreme weather, climate change, and public policies that affect food and water supplies will probably create or exacerbate humanitarian crises and instability risks.” – p. 15
This is one of the greatest dangers facing our society today. The report spotlights vulnerable areas such as Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia that could very soon find it extremely difficult to produce enough food for their massive population. Don’t be surprised, when global production drops precipitously that the dire result is food prices explode all across the world.
Drinkable water shortages are also expected to rise. Developing nations are sure to fall short of securing enough water for their thirsty population. Social unrest and desperation are sure to follow water shortages.
8. Human Security – Instability
“Global political instability risks will remain high in 2015 and beyond… Declining economic conditions are contributing to a risk of instability or internal conflict.” – p. 16
Political instability sweeps the globe: Ukraine, Yemen, Syria and then the sudden rise of ISIS in the Middle East are troubling. The report reveals that “roughly half” of all countries that are not currently unstable may become so with violence breaking out.
“The global economy continues to adjust to and recover from the global financial crisis that began in 2008; economic growth since that period is lagging behind that of the previous decade.” – p. 13
The recent plummeting of oil prices helped the global economy but hurt exporters. We celebrate America’s bustling economy but in reality it is actually contributing to the continued weakness in other countries. As more people invest in America, fewer are looking to invest elsewhere. The United States has inherent right to pursue its economic growth and superiority but we also must remember that desperate nations do desperate things.
The book of Revelation predicts a sudden economic collapse. See Revelation 18:10. The book of James predicts that money will be worthless one day and that the oppressed poor will rise up against the wealthy. See James 5:1-8. The love of money is the root of all evil. – 1 Tim. 6:10. In the last days, Paul forecast that most would be “greedy” “lovers of money” See 2 Tim. 3:1-5
“Savvy, profit-driven criminal networks traffic in drugs, persons, wildlife, and weapons; corrode security and governance; undermine legitimate economic activity and the rule of law; cost economies important revenue; and undercut US development efforts.” – p. 12
Our world is riddled with countless criminal organizations. Drug trafficking is running rampant. Heroin production around the world is near record-high levels now. As the report points out regarding human trafficking, it is an illegal business that nets “tens of billions of dollars annually.” Corruption and instability create an environment where crime of all types can flourish. So the exploitation of the vulnerable continues unabated; perpetrated by those who seem to be “past feeling” (See Eph. 4:19). Paul said of the wicked, “having their own conscience seared with a hot iron” (1 Tim. 4:2). Mankind seems to be desensitized like never before. Paul predicted that in the last days men would be “unloving” and “brutal” (2 Tim. 3:1-5).
5. Space and Counter-space
“Threats to US space systems and services will increase during 2015 and beyond as potential adversaries pursue disruptive and destructive counter-space capabilities.” – p. 11
Many US interests depend upon the capabilities of satellites in orbit. According to the report, Russia and China, continue to develop systems that are able to destroy and disrupt satellites of any nation they target. Their goal is to be able to cripple “reconnaissance, navigation, and communication” tools so that they can effectively hinder any nation’s capabilities.
4. Weapons of Mass Destruction + Proliferation
“Nation-states’ efforts to develop or acquire weapons of mass destruction (WMD), their delivery systems, or their underlying technologies constitute a major threat to the United States, its deployed trooped, and allies.” – p. 9
Nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction have been a concern for decades, and recent developments have given increased cause for alarm. The report says of Iran: “We do not know whether Iran will eventually decide to build nuclear weapons.” Of course front and center in the news now are Iran’s negotiations with other countries to halt their systematic trajectory towards the bomb. China and Russia continue to design new missiles, delivery systems, and transportation for the lethal weapons. And Syria besieged by a bloody civil war has used chemical weapons in direct violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
Paul gave the grim forecast that amidst a growing sentiment of “peace and safety!’ then sudden destruction comes upon them…” (1 Thess. 5:3). In the last book of the Bible, Revelation we learn that Jesus will come at a time when “The nations were angry” and able to “destroy the earth” (Rev. 11:18). But Jesus will come and “destroy those who destroy the earth” (Rev. 11:18). That is good news. Although mankind presently possesses the unprecedented capacity to annihilate civilization as we know it; Jesus will not permit mankind to reduce this world to a spinning globe of ash.
“If ISIL were to substantially increase the priority it places on attacking the West… then the group’s access to radicalized Westerners who have fought in Syria and Iraq would provide a pool of operatives who potentially have access to the United States and other countries.” – p.9
According to the report, Terrorism, and particularly Islamist terrorism, is one of the greatest threats and that “Sunni violent extremists” all over the world are a grave concern for America and its allies.
The report s states that “homegrown violent extremists” continue to be a cause for concern because of their “immediate and direct access” to their home countries. The report says that since 2011, over 20,000 misguided people from around the world have traveled to Syria to join the fierce conflict.
Just today this new report from WORLD website, Religious Liberty by J.C. Derrick posted May, 1, 2015 entitled: “Religious freedom panel: Terror, violence spreading worldwide” “WASHINGTON—The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) this week urged the Obama administration to increase public pressure on foreign governments “perpetrating or tolerating” severe persecution of religious minorities around the world.”
“Humanitarian crises fueled by waves of terror, intimidation, and violence have engulfed an alarming number of countries in the year since the release of [USCIRF’s] prior annual report last May,” the report says. “The horrors of the past year speak volumes about how and why religious freedom and the protection of the rights of vulnerable religious communities matter.”
The report, which spans January 2014 to January 2015, is USCIRF’s 16th since Congress created the commission in 1998 to provide independent recommendations to the president, secretary of state, and Congress. True to form, USCIRF called on the State Department to dramatically increase its list of “countries of particularly concern,” or CPCs, from the current nine to 17.”
“All nations should care about abuses beyond their borders not only for humanitarian reasons but because what goes on in other nations rarely remains there,” said USCIRF chair Katrina Lantos Swett. “In the long run, there is only one permanent guarantor of the safety, security, and survival of the persecuted and vulnerable. It is the full recognition of religious freedom.” WORLD, May 1, 2015
A sobering warning from God for ancient Israel or any country like America that rejects great light, favor and opportunities of Him says, “I will even appoint terror over you,” “Those who hate you shall reign over you, and you shall flee when no one pursues you.” Lev. 26:16,17. David prayed, “Arise, O Lord, Do not let man prevail; Let the nations be judged in Your sight. Put them in fear, O Lord, That the nations may know themselves to be but men.” Psalms 9:19,20.
“Penetrating the US national decision making apparatus and Intelligence Community will remain primary objectives for foreign intelligence entities.” – p. 8
Once again, Russia and China were named in the report as specifically being risk factors for America as it is very likely they will continue to strategically attempt to infiltrate, intercept, and disrupt the intelligence activities of the United States. The report further identifies “Non-state entities” such as organized terrorists as they also are expected to continue to increase their counterintelligence activities.
The report makes it clear that part of this pervasive, growing problem is globalization in which the United States is depending more and more on various international bodies for supplies and services. The report says that, “trusted insiders who disclose sensitive US Government Information without authorization” are listed as being formidable threats to our country.
“Cyber threats to US national and economic security are increasing in frequency, scale, sophistication, and severity of impact.” – p.5
The report states that frequent cyber attacks will most likely be on a small scale will continue to compromise the American economy and Americas national security.
Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea are all named as being culprits in some of the largest infiltrations in recent history. They have been guilty of engaging in activities against the United States financial institutions and carrying out destructive attacks on various corporations.
One thing for sure, Go to be tonight and wake up tomorrow and you may not recognize your world. Expect sudden changes to sweep the globe. Expect to continue to witness a world in turmoil. Expect mankind to become more wicked, depraved and hateful toward each other. But the good news is that Jesus is coming soon! May we prepare for His soon return by seeking to become more like Him every day (See Rev. 19:7-9).
